China

EchoDinner2ASE was honored to be a part of the recent Great Wall International Congress on Cardiology.  During the ASE session of the GW-ICC meeting, Dr. Patricia Pellikka, ASE President, and Dr. Rebecca Hahn presented to the overflow crowd.  In addition the ASE delegation was treated to a tour of the Third Hospital of Peking University.

Four translated guideline posters are being distributed throughout China.  Translations and artwork were prepared for ASE’s guideline posters on prosthetic valves, valve stenosis, LV diastolic function, and pediatric quantification.  Volunteers for this effort included Dr. Feng Xie, Dr. Jiefei Wu, Dr. Jiawei Tian, Dr. Leng Jiang, and Dr. Mei Zhang.  Philips Hong Kong provided generous support for the printing and dissemination of these posters.

India

Our volunteers have returned from the successful December 2012 humanitarian/training mission to rural India.  Read their blog.

EchoNagpur Director Dr. Shantanu Sengupta reports that EchoNagpur 2012 was a huge success, with 312 delegates. The first day was e-Pathshala, a live hands-on interactive workshop on laptop with pre-recorded cases, attended by 140 delegates. The meeting focused on case-based discussion with all practical points discussed. There was a full house all three days with delegates sitting till late evening. ASE was represented at this ASE-endorsed conference in Nagpur, India by Dr. Patricia Pellikka, ASE President; Past President Dr. Bijoy Khandheria; and current ASE Board Member Dr. Partho Sengupta, as well as long-time ASE members Dr. Natesha Pandian, Dr. J.C. Mohan, Dr. Manish Bansal, and Dr. Nitin Burkule. Local media covered the meeting all three days:  read about the meeting in The Hitavada on August 10, August 11, and August 12.

Read Dr. Pellikka’s blog about her trip to India and this article from The Times of India.

Honors and Awards

In 2012 the ASE International Relations Task Force and the ASE Executive Committee selected three outstanding individuals to receive the designation of Honorary Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography. This honor is given to individuals outside the US who have made significant contributions to the field of cardiovascular ultrasound and have played a strong role in building relationships with the Society. We have benefited from their science and their friendship. This honor has been previously awarded to only eleven other recipients.

smisethProf. Otto Smiseth is head of the Division of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Diseases at Oslo University Hospital in Oslo, Norway.  He is recognized for his wonderful investigations in diastolic function and myocardial imaging.  Recently he pioneered noninvasive methods to measure segmental LV work.  Prof. Smiseth organized the first two European Diastology meetings, and he has contributed to numerous ASE guideline documents.

zProf. Jose Luis Zamorano is Head of Cardiology at University Hospital in Madrid.  He is a popular speaker, has served on 19 editorial boards of international journals, been the recipient of 16 research awards, edited 16 books, written 345 publications in peer reviewed journals. Mostly, we know him for his role as President of the European Association of Echocardiography in 2008-2010, when he and Roberto Lang brought our organizations together to work for the good of echocardiography, including the recent World Summit on Echocardiography, a collaboration of echo societies worldwide held in 2011 in Buenos Aires.

wangDr. Xinfang Wang is Professor of Medicine at Tongji Medical University, an institution he has served since he graduated from there in 1958. A pioneer of Echocardiography who has been called the Father of Echo in China, he has been a leading scientist in this field for decades. His book “Echocardiography” is in its fourth edition and has influenced two generations of echocardiographers in China. Last year, he took the time to translate, review and proof the first ASE guideline document for use by the Chinese medical community.

In his presentation to these three individuals during the ASE Scientific Sessions in National Harbor, Dr. James Thomas said, “These individuals are our friends, our colleagues, and our inspiration. Because they will now include FASE behind their names, they will serve as ambassadors for ASE throughout the world.”
Previous recipients of this honor were Jean Dumesnil, MD, FASE (Canada); Raimund Erbel, MD, FASE (Germany); Jorge A. Lowenstein, MD, FASE (Argentina); Chuwa Tei, MD, FASE (Japan); Alessandro Distante, MD, FASE (Italy); Namsik Chung, MD, FASE (Korea); Shintaro Beppu, MD, FASE (Japan); Jos Roelandt, MD, PhD, FASE (Netherlands); Liv Hatle, MD, FASE (Norway); Junichi Yoshikawa, MD, FASE (Japan); and Fausto J. Pinto, MD, PhD, FASE (Portugal).

Another “ambassador” for ASE in 2012-2013 is Paul Lee, winner of the 2012 Arthur E. Weyman Young Investigator’s Award.  Lee, from St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, won for his research on Ultrasound-Mediated Anti-Apoptotic Gene Therapy for Doxorubicin Cardiomyopathy.  He will next present his research at the December 5-8, 2012 European Association of Echocardiography meeting in Athens, Greece and the May 13-15, 2013 Japanese Society of Echocardiography meeting in Tokyo, Japan.
