Transcranial Doppler and Imaging Course

This course is designed for physicians, sonographers, technologists and other health care professionals seeking to acquire the specific skill sets and knowledge base required to perform and interpret transcranial Doppler (TCD) studies. In the course, attendees will learn the basic skills for performance and interpreting TCD, transcranial imaging (TCI) and monitoring studies through didactic lectures and guided hands-on sessions with faculty. Interactive case studies will serve as a basis for development of interpretation skills.
Attendees will also be instructed in the various applications and settings in which transcranial Doppler is performed including the vascular laboratory, emergency room, neurosurgical arena, and operating room. Some of the major topics include performance of TCD in patients with extracranial occlusive disease, functional vasomotor reactivity testing, monitoring during carotid stenting and endarterectomy, diagnosis of intracranial stenosis and acute intracranial occlusion, diagnosis of vasospasm secondary to subarachnoid hemorrhage, and detection and grading of patent foramen ovale. Learning will be accomplished through didactic sessions with faculty presenting in those areas of special interest and/or specialization. Guided hands-on and interactive case studies are also provided where appropriate.
ACCREDITATION Accreditation: Pacific Vascular Institute for Continuing Medical Education (PVICME) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. PVICME takes responsibility for the content, quality, and scientific integrity of this CME activity. PVICME designates this educational activity for a maximum of 21 AMA PRA Category 1 credit(s)TM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. This course satisfies 21 hours of SVU CME credits for Technologists.

This course is designed for physicians and sonographers who wish to enhance their knowledge of the echocardiographic assessment of adult valvular and myocardial disease. Participants with a basic knowledge of echocardiographic techniques and applications will benefit most from this program.
This course is designed to provide the sonographer with a practical review of the current uses and limitations of two-dimensional echocardiography, Doppler and color flow imaging in the assessment of adult myocardial and valvular disease. Recent advances in the field of echocardiography including the assessment of systolic and diastolic function, quantitative Doppler, and stress echocardiography will be presented. This course is intended for physicians and sonographers with an advanced background in echocardiography.
This advanced course is designed to provide the clinician with an update on two-dimensional, Doppler, stress, and transesophageal echocardiography. It is not a “how-to” course, but instead will concentrate on the application of echocardiography in clinical decision making.
The program consists primarily of clinical cases which illustrate the problems cardiologists commonly encounter. Day one concentrates on carotid duplex interpretation with additional tips on dictating vascular reports. This program will provide a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art 2D, Doppler and transesophageal echocardiography with a strong emphasis on newer and more rapidly changing areas. The topics to be covered include diastology, ischemic heart disease, valvular heart disease, 3D echo, application of TEE in clinical practice, cardiomyopathy, and resynchronization in heart failure. The role of echo relative to the newer imaging modalities will be discussed. There are also afternoon workshops on transesophageal echo, hemodynamics, and stress echo. The final workshop will include a series of clinical cases which will focus on integrating various imaging modalities to provide the highest quality of patient care. The course is designed for the clinician and sonographer who are actively involved in adult echocardiography and wish to gain additional practical experience in these specific areas. Daily reading sessions will provide the opportunity to interpret case studies and to compare and discuss diagnoses with the faculty. An integrated format combining theory and practice will be utilized. In the morning sessions, a traditional lecture series will present state-of-the-art information on selected topics. Application of the techniques to clinical practice will be emphasized. Lectures covering pertinent general cardiology topics, such as appropriateness criteria, will also be provided.
In the afternoon, attendees will have the opportunity to apply the lecture material in a workshop environment. A large number of cases will be presented, analyzed and discussed. Each afternoon, attendees will be able to participate in reading sessions, covering either transesophageal echo, stress echo, and hemodynamics.
