Right Ventricular Function
A new ASE guideline on Right Ventricular Function will be published in the July issue of JASE. Prior to reading this document we would like to assess the routine clinical practice of our members who perform echocardiograms.

For all questions, there may be more than one correct answer.

While it is true that the right ventricle plays a significant role in morbidity and mortality of all patients presenting with heart disease, the systematic evaluation of right heart function is commonly neglected. There are several reasons why this is the case. Which of the following currently applies to your laboratory practice?
It is usually true that only the left heart is the problem
It is not clear which ultrasound techniques are valid and the most useful
in addition, where and how to measure the right ventricle in adults is problematic.
There are no good data for normal reference values for right ventricular size and function
The anatomy of the right ventricle makes analysis unreliable and time-consuming

Which of the following measurements of the right heart do you currently provide?
Apical four-chamber view of the right ventricle
Apical four-chamber view of the right atrium
The measurement of the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) from the parasternal short axis
Right ventricular wall thickness from the subcostal view
The dimension and collapsibility of the IVC from the subcostal view

Do you currently use any of the following to aid in the assessment of RV systolic function?
The right ventricular index of myocardial performance (RIMP)
Tricuspid Annular Plane Systolic Excursion (TAPSE)
Right ventricular fractional area change (FAC) or RV ejection fraction (2D EF) by volume trace
Tissue Doppler of the tricuspid lateral annulus
Longitudinal strain and strain rate

If you currently report the assessment of RV diastolic function, which of the following parameters do you measure?
    Pulsed Doppler of tricuspid inflow
Tissue Doppler of the lateral tricuspid annulus
Pulsed Doppler of the hepatic vein
Measurement of the IVC and IVC collapsibility
