The CASE Menu Increases for October CASE!

The latest issue of CASE, ASE’s online case reports journal, is available, and includes 35 articles. This increase reflects the large jump in our submissions during the pandemic. We wish to thank you for sharing your interesting case reports. In this issue, we wish to draw your attention to “Loeffler Endocarditis as a Manifestation of Paraneoplastic Hypereosinophilia,” from Brian P. Kelley, MD, Casey Gazda, MD, and Joseph A. Siyak, MD. Lead author Dr. Kelley says, “We describe a case of Loeffler Endocarditis in a patient with paraneoplastic eosinophilia in the setting of metastatic renal cell carcinoma. Although imaging findings associated with the disease are not uncommonly equivocal, echocardiography plays an important role in its diagnosis and management.”

COVID-19 consequences, anatomic anomalies, aortic awareness, carotid strands, fetal/congenital cases, diagnosing diseases, infectious identities (including “Cardiac Manifestations of Trypanosoma cruzi Infection in a Domestic Dog“), surgical situations, and valve disease are all topics covered in this issue. CASE is a valuable tool for mentors, educators, and sonographers. CASE co-Editors-in-Chief, Karen G. Zimmerman, BS, ACS, RDCS, RVT, FASE, and L. Leonardo Rodriguez, MD, FASE, FACC, are continually grateful to the all the authors and reviewers who have dedicated their time and effort to CASE’s mission of publishing high-quality educational content. We realize this is especially challenging during this pandemic when so much more energy is necessary for navigating everyday life.

CASE always wants to hear from readers and potential authors with opinions and questions. Don’t hesitate to email managing editor, Deborah Meyer at DMeyer@ASEcho.org. We would love to know what in this issue you find especially provocative!

ASE Announces Its 2020-22 Leadership Academy Cohort

The American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) is pleased to announce that 15 members have been chosen to make up the second cohort of the ASE Leadership Academy. This cohort will spend 19 months in training to increase their knowledge and develop skill sets that will help them be successful leaders throughout their careers. The concept for the program, which debuted in 2018, is to create a process to mentor and train future leaders, ultimately creating a pipeline of emerging leaders with specific talents that would be helpful for ASE’s committees and Board of Directors, as well as serving in their own respective institutions or in other organizational leadership roles. ASE is committed to the professional growth of its members and a dynamic volunteer leadership team. The Leadership Academy brings together both of these goals. Read more here.

LIVE WEBINAR: How to Image Cardiac Amyloidosis: From Basic & Advanced Echocardiography to Multimodality Imaging

Join Allan Klein, MD, FASE; Dermot Phelan, MD, PhD, FASE; Sarah Cuddy, MB, BCh; Madeline Jankowski, BS, RDCS, FASE; and Jai Singh, MD, for a live, interactive webinar on October 21 from 12:00 – 1:00 PM ET as they discuss “How to Image Cardiac Amyloidosis: From Basic and Advanced Echocardiography to Multimodality Imaging.” This is the first in a series of webinars supported by an unrestricted educational grant from Pfizer, Inc. A team of specialized physician and sonographer experts designed this webinar to provide education on the early diagnosis, treatment, and management of cardiac amyloidosis. There is an increasing appreciation that this disease is more prevalent than previously thought, and there are newer therapies for the treatment which are important to consider in patient care.

Registration is FREE. You can claim 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ within 24 hours of watching the webinar. The webinar will also be posted for on-demand viewing and claiming CME.

  1. To register, login to your ASE member portal.
  2. Select the ASE Learning Hub from the top red menu.
  3. Register for the webinar here.

By the end of this educational webinar, viewers will be able to:

  • Understand the challenges of identifying patients with cardiac amyloidosis and have strategies for differentiating cardiac amyloidosis from other causes of increased ventricular wall thickness.
  • Summarize the diagnostic evaluation for cardiac amyloidosis, including the differential diagnosis using echocardiography.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the role of multi-modality imaging in the evaluation of cardiac amyloidosis.
