ASE created and approved a policy regarding artificial intelligence (AI) that was submitted for AMA Current Procedural Terminology designation. The policy statement advises developers of AI-based technologies to notify the Society before applying for CPT code designation and encourages collaboration through its Industry Roundtable (IRT) Partners for guidance. Developers must meet minimum criteria such as initiating FDA discussions, having human use at one site, and outlining a U.S. clinical trial for ASE to consider engaging in the CPT process, with submissions requested at least eight weeks prior to AMA deadlines. ASE urges developers to classify their AI technologies as assistive, augmentative, or autonomous, recommending against CPT pursuit for assistive tools, taking a neutral stance on Category III applications for augmentative tools (but supporting Category I advancement post-approval), and declining engagement for autonomous technologies that lack physician involvement.
