On April 17, ASE joined the ALARA+ Coalition in submitting comments to the Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security in support of proposed amendments to 32 Ill. Adm. Code 360, which would authorize the use of Enhanced Radiation Protection Systems (ERPS) as a voluntary alternative to traditional lead aprons during fluoroscopically guided interventional procedures. The Coalition highlighted that occupational radiation exposure carries well-documented long-term health risks, compounded by high rates of musculoskeletal injury from prolonged use of heavy lead-based garments — with annual economic costs estimated at at least $49 million nationwide. The letter commended Illinois for taking a forward-looking approach by recognizing ERPS as a viable alternative and creating a clear, voluntary pathway for facilities ready to modernize their protections.
ASE strongly supports the finalization of these amendments, as its members (including interventional echocardiographers and sonographers who routinely work in fluoroscopic labs) would directly benefit from access to nonwearable shielding systems. The proposed rule’s voluntary structure preserves flexibility for facilities while enabling those ready to transition away from lead-based protection to do so, supporting improved comfort, reduced injury risk, and longer, healthier careers for the echocardiography workforce that is integral to these procedures.
