On July 24, 2025, ASE signed onto an Alliance of Specialty Medicine letter to bill sponsors Reps. Terri Sewell and Brian Fitzpatrick applauding the introduction of the Resident Physician Shortage Reduction Act (H.R. 3890). The legislation calls for an annual increase of 2,000 Graduate Medical Education (GME) residency slots for the next seven years. While expressing support for the bill, the Alliance calls attention to the increasing shortage of specialty doctors and the need for additional designated slots to support the future of the specialty physician workforce. This letter builds on one of ASE’s main policy priorities- supporting the echocardiography workforce. As the medical workforce faces ongoing shortages, it is imperative that Congress support the future of a diverse medical workforce by investing in additional Medicare-supported GME slots for specialties such as echocardiography.
