ASE is seeking the best and brightest members to move forward the mission and goals of the Society. Now is your opportunity to become a leader in ASE. If you are an active member and meet the criteria, ask a friend or colleague who is also a member to submit a nomination on your behalf. If you are an active member who would like to support a candidate, contact them and submit a nomination on their behalf. Positions are available on the ASE Board of Directors and ASE Council Steering Committees. All positions are open to any member* regardless of specialty (sonographer, pediatrician, critical care, circulation and vascular ultrasound, anesthesiologist, etc.). ASE is looking for a diverse pool of nominees.
The process is easy. Candidates need to have:
- one letter of nomination from an active member
- up to three letters of support from an active members that outline the candidate’s leadership abilities
- a current CV (within 3 years)
- a one-to two-page personal vision statement
- a completed online self-assessment survey
- a completed conflict of interest and disclosure statement.
All candidates must participate in a Social Media scan provided by a third-party vendor.
*Members who work for industry are not eligible to serve on the ASE Board of Directors, Council Steering Committees, or Committees.

The president of the American Society of Echocardiography will ultimately be the face of the society to the rest of the world. The vice-president, who is on the ladder for presidency, must be a role model for the quality, initiatives and mission of ASE. The ideal candidate is one who is a long-standing ASE member with international presence who has contributed to the development and growth of the Society through work in committees, the board of directors and other strategic initiatives. Since certification is a quality measure that is highly promoted by ASE, the VP physician candidate should be U.S. board certified in their subspecialty as well as the National Board of Echocardiography. Applicants without U.S. subspecialty board certification can be considered if they are an exceptional candidate that has unique qualifications that will promote the strategic plan of ASE. What defines these qualifications will depend on the strategic plan at the time of the application. The applicant will need to discuss their unique qualifications in their personal statement and show that they have the ability to contribute to the Society in a manner that no other candidate can.
The Vice President’s duties are delegated by the Board of Directors and the President. The Vice President would perform the duties of the President-Elect in the event of their inability to serve. The Vice President will also serve concurrently as Vice Chair of the ASE Foundation Board.
Criteria for Vice President:
- Must be an active ASE member and be a Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography (FASE) at time of nomination.
- Accomplishments in the field should include, but not be limited to, service to the Society, respect/reputation in the profession.
- Has served (or currently serving) on ASE’s Board of Directors and has served as a Chair or Co-Chair of an ASE Standing Committee or Council.
- Officer candidates must be board certified in their subspecialty(ties). Specifically:
- U.S.-based physician (trained in the U.S.)
- MD or DO degree
- Active medical license in the US
- Current Board certification in primary clinical specialty (i.e. cardiology, anesthesia, pediatrics, critical care, etc.)
- Current NBE echo board certification for individuals who practice in specialties where this board exam exists . If the candidate has NBE Testamur status alone without certification, an explanation as to why certification was not obtained needs to be included.
- U.S.-based physician (trained outside the U.S.)
- MD degree or equivalent
- Active medical license in the US
- Current US Board certification in primary clinical specialty (i.e. cardiology, anesthesia, pediatrics, critical care, etc.) is preferred*#.
- Current NBE echo board certification for individuals who practice in specialties where this board exam exists . If the candidate has NBE Testamur status alone without certification, an explanation as to why certification was not obtained needs to be included.
- Physician (living outside the U.S.):
- MD degree or equivalent
- Active medical license in the country of residence
- Equivalent Board certification in primary clinical specialty (i.e, cardiology, anesthesia, pediatrics, critical care, etc.).
- Current NBE echo board certification or equivalent CV exam in the country of residence. If the candidate has NBE Testamur status alone without certification, an explanation as to why certification was not obtained needs to be included.
- Research/Scientist:
- PhD degree – or other equivalent terminal degree (cannot hold an active medical license)
- Allied Health:
- Current certification with national or international sonographer, nurses, PAs, etc. (or equivalent for the allied health field) credentialing bodies in their specialty area.
- For sonographer candidates, ACS Certification is preferred.
- U.S.-based physician (trained in the U.S.)
- must have a letter from their institution indicating approval of the time commitment needed to perform duties as President (approximately 30% of individual’s time)
- Officers must agree that they will not participate in paid or unpaid consultancy positions with companies+ relative to the cardiovascular field (e.g., device and pharmaceutical companies) or for-profit educational bodies (e.g., cardiovascular web businesses, etc.). Uncompensated services on scientific advisory committees, research support, stock ownership, book royalties, and other permitted relationships should nevertheless be disclosed to ASE and to the public.
- Officers must agree that they will not serve simultaneously on any other cardiovascular-related organization’s executive committee (as an officer) while serving on ASE’s Executive Committee.
- Officers must agree that they will not provide testimonials and/or endorsements or participate as speakers or legal witnesses for commercial entities relative to the cardiovascular field (e.g., device and pharmaceutical companies) where that endorsement has not been specifically approved by the Society.
- Officers must declare any volunteer roles with other associations, societies, or cardiovascular-related organizations where their cardiovascular expertise is utilized.
*Equivalent Board certification from the country where training was done can be considered only for exceptional candidates with unique qualifications that serve the strategic plan and goals of ASE.

The Council Representative is a member of ASE’s Executive Committee and represents the voice and interests of all ASE Councils. Candidate must have served on one of the Society’s Council Steering Committees. The Council Representative will also serve as an Ex-Officio member on each Council Steering Committee (including any newly approved Councils during their term). They will attend all Council Steering Committee Retreats.
Criteria for Council Representative:
- Must be an active ASE member and be a Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography (FASE) at time of nomination.
- Accomplishments in the field should include, but not be limited to, service to the Society, respect/reputation in the profession.

The Secretary is a member of ASE’s Executive Committee. This position is designated for a sonographer member. The Secretary shall be in charge of the Society’s records; responsible for the proper and legal notifications of members; shall see to the proper recording of proceedings of meetings of the society, Board of Director and all committees; and carry into execution all orders, votes, and resolutions, not otherwise committed. The Secretary shall see that accurate records are kept of all members. The Secretary will also serve as Co-Editor of Echo Magazine and ASE Publications Committee and serve on the Leadership Academy Selection Task Force.

International Representative (2-Year Term)
This board position is open to a member who does not reside in the continental United States. Candidates who have served on an ASE Foundation outreach event or participated in ASE’s International Alliance partner activities have preference.

Each council consists of a 12 – 15 member governing body charged with identifying and advancing professional priorities for members with specific clinical or professional interest. Determined by separate submission process and appointed by the Council. The Chair may represent the interest of the Council to the ASE Board of Directors and will be held to the same standards of a Member at Large.
Steering Committee members who serve as Representatives to the Education and Guidelines & Standards Committee will serve on both the Council Steering Committee and the respective committees related to their role.

- Nominees for Chair or Chair-Elect should hold the FASE designation. FASE is preferred for Members at Large, but not required.
