The November JASE issue

is now online and has a focus on new echocardiographic markers of risk. Regarding his original investigation “Sex-Specific Left Atrial Strain Thresholds Predict Outcomes in Aortic Stenosis,”  Paolo Springhetti, MD remarks, “Sex-specific thresholds for left atrial reservoir strain—<13% in women and <19% in men—identified patients with at least moderate aortic stenosis at increased risk of death or heart failure hospitalization, outperforming left atrial volume and showing consistent prognostic value in an independent external cohort.”

Other novel echocardiographic markers of risk include mitral regurgitation in patients with aortic stenosis, a risk stratification score for assessment of tamponade, left atrial strain in aortic stenosis, left atrial strain for prediction of sudden death in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, risk factors for aortopathy in bicuspid aortic valve, and fetal echocardiographic predictors of neonatal hypoxia. Readers can also look forward to a study on feasibility of a haptically enabled robot for teleoperated echocardiography, four brief research communications, and a commentary: AI-ECG Utility in the Detection of Preclinical Left Ventricular Dysfunction.

In this month’s President’s Message, ASE President Cynthia Taub, MD, MBA, FASE shares “The Case for Echocardiography, Made in Washington.”
