ASCeXAM/ReASCE Review Course

21st Annual ASCeXAM/ReASCE Review Course: Virtual Experience

After much consideration, the decision has been made to transition the live 2020 ASCeXAM/ReASCE Review Course to be offered online as a Virtual Experience.

This experience will be available on Saturday, May 9 and will offer access to recordings and PDF slides of all scheduled presentations, including physics. There will be a live webinar on Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31 where faculty will answer questions we receive from attendees. A form for questions will be distributed to all registrants on May 9. If registrants are not able to attend the live webinar, the Q&A sessions will be recorded and available in your virtual library.

ASE has specifically designed the ASCeXAM/ReASCE Review Course as a preparatory course for the National Board of Echocardiography, Inc.TM (NBE) ASCeXAM® and ReASCE® examinations. Lectures given will emphasize illustrative cases and as such will not be “canned talks” from other cardiovascular ultrasound courses. This review course will cover all aspects of cardiovascular ultrasound essential to these examinations, including physics, valvular heart disease, ischemic heart disease, congenital heart disease, and new technologies. The expert faculty will use case studies, lectures and interactive sessions to help prepare the attendee for the ASCeXAM® or ReASCE® examinations. The Review Course has been designed with the computer-based examination administration in mind.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants should be better able to:

  • Explain the essential physical principles of cardiac ultrasound.
  • Recognize common ultrasound artifacts and their genesis.
  • Estimate systolic function using standard M-mode and 2D echocardiography, as well as newer modalities such as strain imaging and 3D echocardiography.
  • Identify and quantitate valvular heart disease severity.
  • Describe the application of Doppler in the assessment of hemodynamics and diastolic function.
  • Perform clinically relevant calculations of valve areas and intracardiac pressures.
  • Explain proven techniques for interpreting stress echocardiographic examinations.
  • Differentiate features of cardiac tamponade, constrictive pericarditis and restrictive cardiomyopathy.
  • List appropriate applications of echocardiography.
  • Recognize newer applications of echocardiography such as myocardial contrast.

Simulation Exam

Did you know that ASE has an online simulation exam? You may want to take this practice exam either before or after the course to determine where to concentrate your effort.

The ASCeXAM/ReASCE Online Practice Exam Simulation is designed to prepare physicians for the National Board of Echocardiography’s ASCeXAM or ReASCE certification examinations. Developed by renowned experts in the field of echocardiography, the test bank consists of 300 multiple choice questions containing over four hundred images and video. In addition to objective based questions, case studies are included to evaluate your knowledge of the field. During your eighteen week access, you will be given the opportunity to take two simulated exams consisting of one hundred fifty questions each, assessing your skills and knowledge in all areas. You may repeat these exams a total of six times. The grading and feedback for all six attempts will be saved. In addition to an overall grade, a percentage breakdown of your incorrect and correct answers over the five categories will be provided for each attempt, so that you may focus your study accordingly. Feedback includes explanations of the correct and incorrect answers, offering valuable instruction.

To introduce you to the exam format and to ensure that you are comfortable with the method of answering the exam questions, a practice quiz is provided before you begin your attempts at the full exam simulation. You may take this quiz as many times as you wish.

* The educational content of the quiz is just as important as what is contained in the exam simulation.   Click here to learn how to purchase this important self-assessment tool

Coronavirus (COVID-19) & ASE Live Courses

The health, well-being, and safety of our live course attendees is of the utmost importance, and to that end ASE is closely monitoring the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation. On March 17, 2020, the ASE Executive Committee decided to cancel the live ASCeXAM/ReASCE Review Course in Boston, MA, on May 9-12 and offer it as a virtual online course. For more information on registering to attend this meeting virtually, click here.

The ASE 2020 Scientific Sessions in Denver, CO, on June 19-22 is currently still being planned to take place as scheduled.

In consultation with our leadership, we plan to continue following the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and state and local health organizations in the Boston and Denver areas. In addition, we will also be working with local health authorities at each of the venues to ensure that appropriate precautions are being followed. If you have any questions, please contact us at Registrar@ASEcho.org.

We will continue to post further updates as the need arises.

We  have created a COVID-19 Resources page for our members.

ASE Course Cancellation Policy
At this time, ASE’s current course cancellation policy is in effect. As we continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation, should anything change, we will re-evaluate our cancellation policy at that time in regards to registration refunds.

Current policy is:
If you wish to cancel your participation in any ASE course, your registration fee, less a $100 administrative fee, will be refunded when written notification is received at least 30 days before the first day of the meeting. No refunds will be made after that date or given for no-shows. Registration for any ASE course is non-transferable to another participant or another course. In the event that an individual is unable to attend the conference due to inclement weather or chooses not to attend due to a health epidemic, ASE is unable to refund the conference fee. In the unlikely event the course is cancelled, ASE is responsible only for refund of the registration fee, minus the administrative fee, and not for transportation, hotel accommodations, or any miscellaneous expenses incurred by the participant.
