ASE has expanded its live course portfolio to meet its members’ education needs and to enhance services to the growing number of international members (over 20% of our members!) now participating in the ASE community. Please plan to join us for the Inaugural Echo ASE ASEAN in Bangkok, Thailand on October 23-25, 2015. The aim of the Echo ASE ASEAN Symposium is to provide cardiovascular practitioners with information on state-of-the-art echocardiography technology. This international meeting will be led by expert faculty from the United States and the countries comprising the ASEAN region who are leaders in how echocardiography can be effectively applied to improve clinical care. The faculty will focus on the latest cardiovascular ultrasound technologies. Case-based learning approaches will be used to highlight new and established uses of echocardiography for diagnosis and guiding management in patients with a broad array of cardiovascular conditions. Patrick O’Gara, MD will present the 26th Annual Edler Lecture. O’Gara is currently the Director of Clinical Cardiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and ACC President. Created in 1990, the annual Edler Lecture honors the founder of echocardiography, Dr. Inge Edler. Dr. O’Gara will present his lecture during the ASE Business Meeting and Awards Presentation, Sunday, June 14, which will be held from 8:00 am – 9:30 am at ASE 2015.

The leadership of ASE is pleased to report that the ABIM announced major changes to its Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program.  ASE actively participated in the ABIM’s Internal Medicine Summit on July 15, 2014 in Philadelphia and used this opportunity to articulate our members concerns.  Our ASE representative stated that there “was concern in our community regarding the increased and onerous fees, the serious issue of listing non-participators as “non-compliant” and the confusing and obscure requirements for completion of some of the new modules.”

We laud the ABIM for listening to the concerns of our practitioners and making positive changes. ASE will continue to be in contact with the ABIM to register our members concerns and work with them to influence future MOC policies.

ASE’s president Neil Weissman addressed this announcement by stating, “We heard your concerns, we sent representation to their meeting to address this, they heard us and have made changes. This announcement signals clear progress in the effort to improve the MOC process.”

ASE has been working diligently to adapt to the changes at ABIM and communicate its alterations to our members.   ASE’s Education Committee developed MOC modules last year to facilitate the process for our members; ASE now offers training onsite at our courses and online (ASEmarketplace.com) in an effort to reduce the burden of fulfilling these new requirements.  ASE’s role as an education provider connects us to these changes and we will continue to monitor this situation as it evolves.  Questions or comments?
